I like the style personally. There's really no bad style of graphics in games, as long as you keep it consistent. The tower in the back sticks out like a sore thumb, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but only use this for important locations in the game.

The lighthearted attitude towards violence in games really disgusts me now.

Yeah... me too... *takes down avatar*

Violence has a good place in games. Males are instinctively hunters (look at how a 3 year old is obsessed with ...

I was at a friend's house a few days back, and I met his little brother. He wakes up, gets some food from the kitchen, goes back into his room, and never comes out. He's flunking school, and his social skills are only so-so. He didn't even say hello to me. You find a stranger in your house, and you're not even curious at the very least?

So, I've actually met a video game addict. And it was a terrible sight to see.

The guy's been given one life, and he spends it without feeling, without ...

I got a free song as a promotion a few months ago. I thought, what's the big deal? It's free! The site was a slightly-less-popular mp3 store. I browse their limited selection of music until I found a track I liked.

I bought it with the coupon code and downloaded it. It was a DRMed wma file encoded at 192kbps, which I regard as the bare minimum for enjoying music on my setup. It wouldn't play in Foobar2000 (aka the best media player ever made) so I had to use WMP to listen. I then looked ...

Zandair I know you listen to jazz or something like that. After hooking up a (tube?) amp I found around the house and plugging them into my DT770s, music sounds MUCH better now. I have no clue why I didn't check out my smooth jazz collection earlier on this set-up. If you know what the term eargasm means (that rush you get when hearing something so good it relaxes your entire body), well I've had a lot of it after listening to some jazz on this rig.

So... what are your favorite jazz artists? ...

Hey Zandair, there's a synthpop singer called Lights that my friends are into. Her voice is I think the best I've ever heard, and I've heard a LOT of music. Lyrics are just a bunch of love songs, but I'll let her go because she's hot (I've heard way too many love songs over the past years)

February Air (people say this is her best song but I like Drive My Soul much better):

Drive My Soul (I hate the music video for this one so you'll get this instead):

Microsoft thought they would mess with us and release 6 different operating systems for their new Windows 7 line. Because Microsoft likes giving developers headaches. It's true, look at IE. Try the acid3 test in IE and you'll get an idea of how much of a pain IE is for web developers. Why don't they just release one version instead of 4 crippled versions and 2 full ones?
Lately I've been browsing around gog.com, a somewhat new steam-like site. It's pretty nice. No game is over $10 and many are $6. The site is beautiful in design, all games are DRM-free (but do have a wrapper which lets older games be compatible with vista, just saying this because they might not work as steam shortcuts. Still, there's no DRM or download limit), and most games come with loads of extras such as sound tracks, wallpapers and other stuff.

Here's some ideas for changes:

In order to make the site look much more professional, it would be better to have the games download directly, instead of being redirected to FileFront. But that probably costs money to do. But Weebly (the Ultima Games hoster) allows file hosting. I've found out that you can hot link to these downloads and never have to see the site. We can use this to skip FileFront and just go directly with a download.

I've been looking into CMSs again, and I remember my friend having a community site that used PHP Fusion. His site was nice and it worked well. I'm thinking of using this CMS when they activate MySQL for our zandairstudios account.

I've been playing too much Team Fortress 2 lately and was coming up with a bunch of class ideas for a single-player class-based team game.

And then there's those sprites for a tactical platformer.

And I've had ideas for an action game in which blocks fall from the sky and you have to reach the top to survive. In addition to variations on the blocks, missiles and enemies would drop in too.

Any better ideas? go ahead.

I spent most of today designing the new Zandair Studios site.

Zandair Studios is back on 110mb's host, which I had no problems with in the past. It was reliable, ad-free, free of charge, and had more than enough disk space/bandwidth. I am glad to say ZS is now using it. Sadly, the new website is plain HTML. This means it is no longer a community site.

You can look around the site, but the site is unfinished. The reason it is not finished is because ...

What Makes a Great Game

By Alex Higgins (Zandair)

Making a great game starts at design. A game that’s been poorly designed from the beginning is doomed to fail. Here we’ll be analyzing some of my favorite games and discovering what made them great, what made similar games rot, and then what you always should consider when making a game.

The Basics

The full original Zandair Studios site can be found at the root, not the Joomla folder.

But, Freeweb7 is still not a good host since it has much server downtime. I don't think the ads were because of Freeweb7, actually I have no clue where they came from.

A sad day indeed.

I really wanted to see how far this could go... I support Zoltan's decision, but am nonetheless disappointed. I was done working with SW anyway, but after everything its taught me about good game design (things that I had previously be unable to learn with game maker) I can't help but feel sad.

What are your thoughts on it?

EDIT: Oooh... plutonium 3D... sweet...

Or so says the Freeweb7 forums, not the Freeweb7 rules on the main site.

Can I use Joomla here?

NO! Joomla is a heavy CMS script that we don't allow on our servers for a reason. It uses up too much CPU to be used by one person at a time, which causes our hardware to crash, causing server downtime. We also don't allow other heavy CPU consuming scripts that consist of, gaming, ad-revenue, Joomla, Mambo, Dolphin. If you believe a script might be heavy, ask before use. Cram the entire plot into one game: It'll be closer to commercial length, definately finish the story, and I won't have to worry about making a sequel I don't want to make. But it'll take an extra month or two of development time.
