I can't stand this Michael Jackson hoopla

Post  Jonny on Fri Jul 10, 2009 1:33 am

Alright, I have to admit, the day MJ died it was important news. I was sort of sad. However, about a week later, I'm still seeing his name everywhere. EVERYWHERE. They are profiting off his death. Normally I wouldn't care about something like this because it happens all the time, but all this attention and coverage angers me. The news shows (not that I watch TV) make MJ seem like such a great guy and using words like "untimely" to describe his death. Michael Jackson wasn't a good person nor was he a role model. He was a pervert, drug abuser, and a freak. Alright? No, it wasn't because he was beaten as a child. Back then it was socially acceptable to beat your kids. Stop feeling so bad for him, he took drugs and as a result died. And no, it wasn't a homicide.

This isn't a comment about his talent. I admit I like some of his music. It's just me fed up with all these advertisements and news stories.

Anyone who's been deprived of their childhood like any child star has turns up as a wacko.

I'm a bit frustrated as well. Why didn't my favorite comedian, George Carlin, get the same treatment when he died? He may have only been half as culturally important as Jackson, but only got one day of public mourning. Compare that to Jackson's entire goddamn month.

Its also funny to think that everyone would still view him as nothing more than a celebrity weirdo if was still alive, since that was the popular thing to do then. Now that he's dead, its become popular to admire him.

I went on a roadtrip to Quebec last week. In Montreal, the international Montreal Jazz festival was held. Stevie Wonder gave a free concert one weekend, which everyone in Montreal attended. We waited in a massive crowd, in the rain, for him, until those of us in the back finally saw him on the massive videoscreen (we couldn't see the stage). He gives a nice little shpeel on Jackson, which was fair. He then inserts a clever bit of marketing by saying: "If you want to support his family, just buy his music, man." (As though his family actually needed any monetary support).
Then, during the concert, the band stops playing, instead playing two Jackson tapes. What the Hell?

We left a third of the way through.
