Silent Walk FPS Creator: Community Edition

Post  Jonny on Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:51 pm

It's great news Zoltan has released the source code for SW1.1. We as a community should create an FPS making program with the source, with all of us contributing as a team. I'm already working on the source myself, and it's looking great. So how about it?

Here's some ideas for changes:
-Make the game render consistently fast (as in, change all the room speeds to 60, and all the non-3d editor speeds to 999. 999 just means there is no limitation on how fast it can run, so it's great for editors)
-Make the editor be able to set values for player speed, jumping height, camera height, maximum up/down look.
-Fixing the bug where the gun would go off-screen into the abyss by adding a reset option.
-Fixing other bugs, such as the gun in-game looking really weird.
-Somewhere down the line implement a working save system.
-Add an interface designer
-Add a menu designer
-Maybe a level select like in Half-Life 1 and 2?
-Add an options screen where the player can specify windowed or fullscreen as well as mute music or not.
-Add mipmapping support, to speed up the game rendering.
-Maybe a cleanup tool for the editor to remove any floors/walls/ceilings that are overlapping?
-Improve the editor itself, with options like dragging so making rooms isn't nearly as tedious.
-Maybe add an option where the 2d editor draws a scaled-down texture based on the position of the mouse?

That's all I can think of...
Time to get working!

Sounds great! I'll have to check it out.
I also want to add some new gameplay functionalities:
-Weapon spread, damage, ROF (maybe projectile speed, start damage, damage reduction over time?)
-A few more AI settings?
-Ability to set the height of floors, walls, cielings, and lights (Because of the editor, you won't be able to stack rooms on top of eachother, so it'll be more like Doom. However, I consider this an improvement.)

I'll check the code out. I am by no means a GML buff and see little as to how I'm going to make a huge difference in this project. (I only just figured out how to write loops and use instance IDs to my advantage...)

I'm a little confused with GML. Been so long since I've done serious work with Game Maker I've forgotten most of what I know.

But SW1.1 being open source? AWESOME. I just hope nobody steals it and tries to market it as his own, at least without making serious changes to it so it's unrecognizable to the original.

Just thought I'd ask about progress. And to suggest being able to have animated wall .gifs

Development is going painfully slow... I might just rewrite the whole editor source. IDK, it's a mess.

Well, I'm still working on it.

I have lots of schoolwork and on top of that I'm entering some local website design competition that could potentially get me scholarship money. The deadline is in a couple of weeks so that is definitely my priority over SWCE.

Hm, Baltimore County policy says students aren't supposed to have homework over spring break. Funny, I'm packed with it too. Good luck with the website design comp.
